PRINCE JAVID (9.23.2006)

It’s been like three years or so since Maria and her prince last communicated. She met him over an online pen pal listing and in the instant they were Prince and Princess of each other since his initiation of the matter. There was not a romantic link; it was purely friendship what went by between them. They used to just exchange emails, and share photos. Three years back they would always update each other of one’s whereabouts…of one’s love and life.

Prince Javid was one person who was very kiddy, playful and faithful. Princess Maria was indifferent, composed and stubborn. An odd pair; a classic opposite poles attract. The last she heard of him before they had sped out into their separate mazes was that he was hopelessly in love with his female mentor at school. She found it rather corny since she wasn’t the person at that time that tickled for such fancies; however, she dismissed it as somewhat just his uncharacteristic behavior towards that meantime euphoria.

Off they went. The emails slowed until there were no more emails for a time. Life got busier as time flew faster. Princess Maria lived from the simple life to a certain scale of extravagance. Life became fun, diverse and complicated.

For Princess Maria living those three years without any note from the prince was like a complete adjustment from what she got used to. But she lived despite his cyber absence in her life and serenity. The first two months or so, she has fervently checked her email account in the hopes of finding a new mail from him, but in the devoted time frame of taking the effort to check what was expectedly not coming in anytime, she did not get any.

She felt betrayed and abandoned. And what she usually does in this event is to runaway. It is actually already a talent…for the runaway. In all issues hovering her melodramatic life…family, friends, work…

She was one person who was in difficulty with letting go and goodbye. She doesn’t recognize, “the ones you mostly try to keep are the ones you lose.”

Prince Javid and his sudden disappearance caused her weary more than he’ll ever know.

And two years more advanced from the first three. Princess Maria matured into the things and incidences she has accumulated within the five years since her prince have become silent. Within those five years, though, each day she allotted a minute or two to reminisce him or wonder whatever happened to him. She’d remember, sadly, in one of their email correspondence when she ranted that he takes too long before he can reply to her emails, he told her, “I will only stop communicating with you when I am already dead, my princess.”

She did not want to believe he was dead, because she can feel his presence despite their distance and lost communication. Princess Maria quivered at the thought every time.

One night, she was online at YM. In the years back since the prince’s disappearance, she added his YM ID on her messenger list, hoping to see his emoticon light up yellow and smile. She never really gave up on the hope of crossing his path again. That night was the fated night for her hopes to materialize, for her faith to rekindle.

Since reaching the peak of her age and career, and finding herself still discontented with what she has achieved up to that point, she hibernated into a session in cyber space hoping to find a sensible person to talk with online. She didn’t care who it would be at that time. She just really needed someone to listen to her. It was a night when even her best of friends were indisposed, busy elsewhere with other affairs to attend to. It was a time when simply there was no one to turn to, who was willing to pay attention to her rant rewind; when her prayers seemed to have gone unanswered, or pending.

She felt alone. It was as if her surrounding has completely surrendered, and the curtains have been permanently put down. She felt soiled six feet under the ground. She usually found herself staring blankly at nowhere. She listened to her mp3 collection but couldn’t really hear anything.

Even the chat rooms seemed barren for some strange reasons. There was not a sign of anyone in her messenger list who was online. Restless and hopeless, she settled to just surf and pour out on her blog, completely leaving idle her messenger.

Suddenly, an unexpected chat box suddenly popped before her uninterested face. She opened to find a reincarnated prince with that very startling message, “Do you remember me?”

For a time she just looked at his chat box wide eyed without moving a muscle. As if a pale of ice-cold water had been poured over her head without anticipation.

“Hi, Princess.” He added another message. “Are you online now?”

“Yes.” Came her only reply.

“Well, how are you? I’ve missed you!” He replied.

She was quiet for a long time. Prince Javid was already buzzing.

“You have changed drastically, my princess. Whatever happened to the bubbly girl from down south?”

Princess Maria had to stifle a chuckle. He remembered her pretty well.

“Whatever happened to you?” She backfired. “You just went quiet without any word! Did you think it was all right? For the things I have grown accustomed to, for you to just suddenly disappear like blur.”

It was his turn to be taken aback without the slightest idea how to begin telling her.

“So, you wanted to know how I have been?” She added. “Life lately has been nothing but shit!”

“Why?” He asked reluctantly with a custom smiley.

“I just don’t like living this life anymore. I am done.”

“Can you be a little specific?”

She was thinking that perhaps it was all right to tell him. For him it wasn’t a rewind. Did she really want to welcome him with her bullshit? She thought again rather hesitantly.

“I am not happy anymore.” She put in simply without any further elaboration.

“Why?” He asked again.

“This has been going on for a long time than expected.” She replied rather differently. “For the longest time, I still couldn’t cross the river to the other side. I am so tired of this meadow.”

“Slow down, my princess, your English is very good, I couldn’t catch up. Mine is just classroom, you know.”

She decided to cut the chat. So she left her messenger idle again. She did not want to be rude, so she couldn’t purposely just go offline.

Prince Javid sensing her indifference punched in smiley in different facial emotions. His effort was ignored. But she was online so he did not give up.

“My princess, listen,” He tried again, “I too have my own reasons to be very sad. I believe my recent condition and what I had to go through versus your total solitude…mine is more absolute.”

She was maintaining her silence whilst reading his messages.

He continued to type in the chat box. “I now have all the things everyone is wishing to attain in their lifetimes. I can afford to obtain every little thing to my desire. I left you, yes. I left because I had gone out to work for a better life. My biggest mistake was not leaving you a note and it was because the circumstances at that time did not allow me to do so. Sometimes, some things happen for a reason. Sometimes they are blessings in disguise. They happened but they were not intentional. They were fated.”

He paused.

Then added: “I am a rich man now, Princess. But in my desperate attempt to obtain this wealth, I lost one of my legs. Even then, I have a great God!”

She was already crying. This person never lied to her. Suddenly her worries felt lighter compared to his predicament, but he was content.

“I have a great God because he still allowed me to enjoy what I have worked hard for with some lessons to learn.” Prince Javid kept on punching in his messages without care if she was actually reading him. “ I lost my right leg, but I have gained greater wisdom and compassion for my life.”

It was a huge eye opener for the likes of Princess Maria who had a hard time letting go, letting be…who hated goodbyes.

Prince Javid lost one of his legs and still he shouts, “I have a great God!”

Selfless. Devoted. Faithful.
